• The program began under the name Rupert’s Land Respite Care in August 1985 as a mission of the Diocese of Rupert’s Land.  The program continued until June 1993, when it was interrupted due to a decline in requests for service and difficulty recruiting volunteers.
  • The program was begun again in January 1995 when the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA) provided funding under the umbrella of Services to Seniors.
  • In April 1995 the service acquired office space in St. George’s Anglican Church and hired a Program Director.
  • The organization is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and funded by the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, the Diocese of Rupert’s Land and private donations.
  • The name of the organization was changed to Rupert’s Land Caregivers Services in April 1998.  The new name is more of an indication of what we do.  We are not just a respite service but offer a variety of services for caregivers.
  • In 2005 the WRHA provided additional funding to hire a part-time coordinator of volunteers.
  • In 2007 RLCS hosted its first bi-annual Caregiving with Confidence conference.
  • In 2011 RLCS achieved charitable status.
  • In 2014 funding from WRHA was increased to increase the hours of the Volunteer Coordinator to full-time.
